Laparoscopic Treatment of Ovarian Cysts

Master
Content

Laparoscopic surgery offers a minimally invasive approach for removing benign ovarian cysts - fluid-filled sacs that develop on the ovaries.

A laparoscope - a thin, lighted tube with a camera on the end - and other specialized surgical instruments are inserted into the abdomen through very small incisions. The camera sends images of the inside of the body to a TV monitor in the operating room, allowing the surgeon to locate and remove the cysts without the need for a large incision.

Benefits over open abdominal surgery include less pain, less blood loss, fewer complications, less scarring, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery. Many patients go home the same day (outpatient surgery) or the next morning.
