Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure

A loop electrosurgical excision procedure is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove abnormal cells found in the cervix.

This simple procedure is typically done in the doctor's office and only takes a few minutes.

During the procedure, a lighted magnifying instrument known as a colposcope is inserted through the vagina to view the lining of the cervix and look for abnormal cells. Abnormal areas of tissue are removed using a thin, wire loop that works like a scalpel. An electric current is passed through the loop as it removes the abnormal tissue, cauterizing the blood vessels to control bleeding.

The tissue that is removed is then examined under a microscope to look for cancerous cells.

The procedure may be recommended after an abnormal pap smear, or to treat dysplasia, abnormal changes in the cells lining the cervix.
