For women who suffer from severe pain in one small area of the vulva, a condition known as localized vulvodynia (vulva pain), surgery may be an option when nonsurgical treatments fail to provide relief.
Some women, for example, suffer from pain confined to the area around the opening of the vagina (the vestibule), a condition known as vestibulodynia.
A vestibulectomy involves surgically removing the painful tissue. It is typically performed as an outpatient procedure.
A vestibulectomy is not done for women with generalized vulvodynia, or chronic pain felt throughout the entire vulva region.
