Symposium Day: Thursday, March 7, 2024

The symposium will be held in two rounds. In the first round, all accepted submissions will be required to upload a narrative recording on VoiceThread. These submissions will undergo scoring by judges and the top posters in each category will be invited to present their work in-person in Rayzor Lounge and compete for the Henry J.N. Taub Young Investigator Award, as well for the Most Popular Poster Award. The number of posters selected for in-person presentations will be proportional to the number of submissions in each category.
Poster Presentations, 9 - 11 a.m.
Medical students are expected to present their work during the designated presentation time (9-11 a.m.). The presentations will be scored by the judges and top posters in each category will receive the Henry J.N. Taub Young Investigator Award. In addition, all attendees (visitors including students, judges, faculty, coordinators) have a chance to select their favorite poster via live electronic voting on Symposium Day (QR code provided in Rayzor Lounge) and the winner will be awarded the “Most Popular Poster Award”.
Meet and Greet, 11 a.m. - Noon
The SOAR (Student Opportunities for Advancement in Research) Program office will discuss the SOAR database, which houses projects from investigators throughout the college. Faculty submit projects from a variety of research disciplines. The searchable database is a great place for mentors to announce projects and research interests to motivated medical students. Projects from all BCM faculty and any affiliated institution are welcome.
The Department of Medicine will host an informal session to discuss various ongoing and potential clinical, translational, basic science, and educational research opportunities within many of Medicine’s sections and affiliations. Medicine faculty and trainees will be present to talk about their projects. This is a chance for networking and learning what type of research is available to medical students.
Keynote Address: 12:15 - 1:15 p.m.
The keynote address will take place in conjunction with the Department of Medicine Grand Rounds. The presentation will be given in Cullen Auditorium. The presentation will also be available via Zoom for those who cannot attend in person.
Keynote speakers are asked to speak about their journey as clinicians and researchers through sharing anecdotes, accomplishments, successes, and failures, directly addressing medical students.

On March 7, 2024, we are excited to welcome Maria Elena Bottazzi, Ph.D., FASTMH as our keynote symposium speaker. Dr. Bottazzi is a professor in the Department of Pediatrics (Division Chief of Pediatric Tropical Medicine) and Molecular Virology and Microbiology. Dr. Bottazzi is also the Senior Associate Dean of the National School of Tropical Medicine and co-director of Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development. As a long-standing clinical and translational science researcher and educator, she will share with us her story and vision that guided her throughout her career.
Awards Presentation 1:15 - 1:30 p.m.
The best (top scoring) presentations in each category (basic science, educational, health system science, and clinical) will be awarded with the Henry J.N. Taub Young Investigator Award, an award that was established to specifically support young clinical investigators in their research projects. The “Most Popular Poster Award” will be given to the poster securing the most visitors votes. All award recipients will receive a certificate, a monetary prize, and will be added to our winner list, which is part of our compendium.
The award presentation will be given in Cullen Auditorium. Certificates may be handed in-person and photos may be taken.
