Electives
Students seeking an elective in ophthalmology have a variety of alternatives available to meet their educational interests. In addition to the established elective clerkships in ophthalmology such as General Clinical Ophthalmology, Vitreoretinal Diseases, and Oculoplastics, electives can also be arranged with an individual instructor to create a unique educational experience. Students interested in an ophthalmology elective should first consult the elective handbook. If the desired learning experience is not listed as an established elective, the student should contact the office of Dr. Lauren Blieden, Director of Medical Student Education in Ophthalmology, (713) 798-4299, for assistance in designing an educational program.
If an elective is arranged by special permission or an elective is to be taken outside the Texas Medical Center and does not have a Baylor elective number, the student should enter SPEC on the elective application for the elective number.
Enrollment in electives away from Baylor requires the signed approval of the Coordinator of Electives within the specific department, and the filing with the Office of Student Affairs of the signed elective enrollment form prior to the enrollment deadline date for the particular academic quarter. Most elective applications require that the College certify that the student is covered by malpractice and health insurance and is in good standing with the College. This certification by the Office of Student Affairs is not approval to take the elective, only certification of the above items. In addition, the student must furnish a letter indicating acceptance by the faculty member or physician at the extramural institution.
A student cannot take concurrently an elective course and a clinical core rotation.
At least 24 elective credits must be earned on site at Baylor.
