Sepsis Screening, Diagnosis, and Treatment at an Emergency Department (H-44121)

Background: Sepsis is a leading cause of death worldwide. Early recognition and treatment are essential for mortality reduction. There is limited data on the burden and treatment of sepsis in low and middle-income countries, especially in Central America and the Caribbean. The purpose of this study is to retrospectively examine parameters related to the recognition of sepsis and its subsequent treatment in the Emergency Department (ED) at the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority (KHMHA).

Purpose: Our goals are multifactorial, we aim to conduct a chart review of adult and pediatric patients presenting to KHMHA ED with possible sepsis, before and after the introduction of a triage sepsis screening protocol. We will characterize the burden of sepsis and treatment practices in the KHMHA ED. We will examine the accuracy of various sepsis screening and prognostic tools in the adult and pediatric populations.

Project status: initial data collection is complete, post-protocol data collection has not yet begun.
